So, after working on the website awhile and talking with some of the Watchmen it seems as if a lot of people have either not though to much about their persona's backstory, or for the most part, not at all.
While its not mandatory in any sense to have a backstory for your character I think it does add an element of depth to them. Therefor I wanted to start posting questions and ideas on the boards here under "Character Building" to see how people respond to their character so I can get an idea as to how you feel if you were in their "shoes", so to say.
I plan on making one of these weekly/bi-weekly. This will most likely go into the Tome of Ravens as I plan on writing several pages of information for each persona as records.
I will make a list of all active Watchmen and members I see on here. I will remove your name as you give me the response. Just post them on here if you would like, that works just fine.
Question: "Why did your character join the house that they did. Were you a blacksmith before joining the Watch? Did you used to spend several hours of the day in the Libaray of King's Landing, pouring over scrolls? Did your father teach you how to use a bow at a young age and you took a knack to hunting animals?"

for my story: I lived alone or with only a few giants most of my life. Beyond the wall if you dont have shelter your as good as dead. So I built to survive and when put with the choice came wether to sit in a dark room poring over scrolls, freeze my face off laying in the snow beyond the wall, or working on the most awe inspiring structure in the world.... the choice was clear.
This sounds really really bias i know but thats my story.

My example: Mallos is a steward because as a young Tauren he spent many nights listening to the verbal tradition handed down through the generations of Druids as his Grandfather, Archdruid Hamuul Runetotem, would stand before a great fire and tell stories of daring battles, great hunts and the wise and powerful druids of the past. Now he spends his time in the makeshift library of Castle Black reading over countless books, scrolls and tomes obtained by the rangers and stewards over the years. Because of his old age and decline in his fighting skills Mallos wants to make himself useful for his commanders and feels like the more that he knows in everything from war tactics to basic lore, the more prepared he can be when the need for that information arises.

Well... being part of the Free Folk, I had little choices in growing up, so.... I grabed a bow and began to hunt for my... tribe, i guess you could call us... Shortly after, I was taken captive by the men of the Watch, and soon became a crow myself. Plus, I think its because I know the areas where we've been on rangings, I can move more... swift, than some.

In my younger years working on the farm, i had to do some blacksmithing, mainly horse shoes but soon was able to increase my skills to making armor and weapons. I joined the house of builders to further increase my skills in making weapons and armor.

No problem Tyr, only thing is the reason Mallos started the thread was so that he could better understand the reason for our characters joining one of the three houses within the Night's Watch, so the question really only applies to the unit. Not saying there shouldn't be more discussion on character building in general, but this thread really only has to do with our unit's house system.

That and it helps me fill the pages of the Tome of Ravens, the "official" log and record book of the Night's Watch.
Now if I can get the Watchmen who read this to post and quit lurking...

Devlin has been with Martus from the start; supporting his misson by helping to develop traing methods and tactical assualt patterns.
Hippolyta was the leader of a band of women warriors that were ramapging the countryside. The rather long verson of her joining the Night's Watch and her marriage to myself will be available someday.

Malciah joined the house of stewards because it was the house that fit best. Malciah has skill with crafting, but no so many as other, more talented brothers. As a Septon of the Warrior the house of rangers seemed like a fit but the House of Stewards is were he found situations adequate to give his brothers spiritual guidance. The libraries seemed like a better place to conduct service for the seven then the snow covered fields, however he is still a Septon of the Warrior, courage and battle prowess are still his domain.

Nikias had been a wondering ranger traveling alone for vengeance and justice for quite some time before reaching the wall and finding a new calling in life. It seemed natural for him to stand behind first ranger Arc and join him in his travels beyond the wall in serving the Night's Watch in any way he could.
