A lot of people have told me they want me to teach them to fight better with spears, so I wrote this tutorial. I warn you its kinda long, but if you have time, read it and tell me what you think! I'd love some input on it. I am considering teaching a class based on this tutorial at the next Gates. Attachments:

It was a good read! I suggest this to anyone who wants to learn much about spear fighting. Also if you are bored and have free time to study.

Here is a copy of the tutorial in word 97-03 format if you couldnt open the word 07 file. I talked to Grumio this Sunday and we plan to turn this manual into a video soon, I'm guessing probably in the next few months or so. Attachments:

Quick question about spear fighting. I fight with my dominant hand as a guide hand and holding the side arm.
Would you recomend adapting the advice, or relearning how I fight?

Id recommended dropping the Rainbows and Unicorns stick. I'm going to assume this is a joke.

Quick question about spear fighting. I fight with my dominant hand as a guide hand and holding the side arm. Would you recomend adapting the advice, or relearning how I fight? I'm trying to get a clear picture of this. When you say guiding hand, I am picturing you holding your sidearm in the hand that is closest to your enemy, the hand which gives direction to the thrusts which are given power by your thrusting hand. If this is true, keep doing what you're doing. What I was trying to stress in the manual is that your sidearm should be in your guiding hand, the hand closest to the enemy, so when they charge your dead zone, you have extra time to react. You bring up a rather interesting point though. If I am envisioning this correctly, your standard stance is a mirror image of mine. If it works for you, that's great. You have the advantage of using your sidearm in your dominant hand as well. If you are right handed, however, this means you would be sparring right handed against people with shields. I'm not saying this is a bad thing, especially if you have a background in shieldman fighting style, but they will always have the upper hand in close melee because of the shield. My guiding hand is my left hand, so anyone who charges my dead zone is greeted with a left handed dagger thrust. Many people find it difficult to fight southpaw fighters, and I see this as an advantage, personally. Ultimately, I'd say the choice is up to you: continue fighting as you are, with the advantage of using your dominant to wield your sidearm, or switch, possibly requiring you to learn to fight southpaw with a dagger, but giving you a slight advantage from fighting left-handed. It's almost a wash in what type of benefit you would gain and lose by switching your sidearm from dominant to non-dominant hands. It's a tough decision. I'd recommend trying my way if you feel you have hit a plateau of skill some time in the future, and see if it improves your technique. If you still have plenty to learn, keep your current setup. Thanks for the input, and I hope I answered your question to your satisfaction. Enjoy some spear fighting!

The more I think about it, I believe my positioning of hands is largely due to the fact that my back shield is set up a certain way. The shield strap goes from my left shoulder to my right hip, and this sort of dictates the way I fight to some extent. I swivel my torso to the left when blocking arrow shots and some melee swings. Maybe if I had a back shield that strapped the opposite way and I changed my stance to your "goofy" stance I could try it out and perhaps learn something.
Thanks Khyn, I think you may have just enlightened me as to what my next pet project will be. I hope to avoid the dreaded plateau of skill and this may be a way out in the future.

Thanks for the help. I noticed that my stance was different than alot of the right handed spear fighters at War. Going over tutorial vids and manuals, it sounds like the goofy stance is rare, but is not disavantaged.
Is there any chance of a spear class at an upcomming event?

Yes, I plan to do some revisions to the guide with the input I've gotten from friends, then I plan to work with Grumio to turn it into a video, and finally I'd still like to do a class based on the guide next spring at Gates of Summer.

If you fight Right-hand forward (i.e., your right hand is your guiding hand and your left is producing the power), you can just JACK right handed s&b fighters, especially those with round shields, in the stomach with a hip-swivel-type power shot. They can't guard against that sort of shot from you without exposing their shield-side shoulder to your buddies, either.

Also,
"A lot of times a backstabber will try to do this and call courtesy, but remember, courtesy shots don’t work from the front. Call “light” and get him before he runs away. "
If "courtesy" shots are to work At All, they MUST work in all conditions in which you are not aware you are about to be hit. What do you think the point of a courtesy shot is??
Then again, I loathe courtesy shots and would rather be hit properly from all side and angles, so, whatever. I'll call light on any damn thing.
