Hello All
I am brand new to the Dagorhir scene. So new I don't have any weapons. I would love to make a two handed great sword. Something around 5 feet...maybe a little larger. I've been all over the net and I haven't found much information on how to construct large red swords. What kind of core should I use, and If I need to order it could you provide a link? I don't want to drop money on something that ends up whippy or just crap. So I am coming to you guys for some expertise.
Thanks a lot!

Hello again. I hope someone out there reads this I would like to know if a solid 1/2 inch fiberglass rod or 3/4inch rod would be best for a 5ft 3inch greatsword. I've been reading that there are square fiberglass rods out there that work well but I dont know where to find them. Any thoughts or suggestions for making a great sword would be most helpful. Thanks

My great sword has a 1/2 in core. Most will agree I am a rather large fellow and have no fear of it breaking. Shield breaker swings produce little to no flex. If your going for power, 1/2 should be more than sufficient. If you a speed fighter, you may want to consider going smaller on your core. I would suggest hitting up your local realm and borrowing a few reds for a bit to get a feel of what you like. Hate to see you make something and hate it. Not all reds are created equal. What I prefer and what another prefers can be vastly different. Good luck to you and report back on your progress. And welcome to Dag!

If you use PVC, make sure it's Schedule 80 as 60 will break on your red. I'd go half inch at least, but 3/4"s more than sufficent. You can also invest in fiberglass rods or bandshoppe poles. There are all kinds of threads about this stuff on the Dagorhir boards AND the Belegarth boards. And if you have any other questions feel free to call or message me.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I look forward to having my own Dag weapon. Solusar and Nox, you guys know me as Eric. I haven't come up with a character name, so for the time being I am keeping it simple. Eric Craig's Son I would like to try out a fiberglass weapon just because its something I have little to no experience with. So thanks Deegun for your information on the 1/2 inch core. I have heard about bandshoppe poles but I heard they might hit to hard for a red sword (something about having no flex). I hope to get some sort of weapon made soon so I can check out a Dominion Practice this May.

This thread ain't old enough to qualify for dead, is it?
1/2" anything isn't gonna work for a 5' redsword core. Well, maybe .5"x.5" square fiberglass, but nothing smaller or round. Your best core will be either bandpole or 3/4x1/2" square fiber, likely.
3/4" Schedule 80 or 1" Sched 40 would probably work.

Thanks. How wide should the non striking side be of the blade? I see alot of advice for blues, but not much for reds. I saw one at 4 inches. How does that sound for a red?

It should be as wide as it needs to be. For my 49" red on 1/2" square fiberglass, I used four layers of bluefoam for each striking surface, so the final width, with cover, was 3 7/8" (3.875"). I don't recommend any less padding than 4 layers of blue for yoru striking surfaces, that's for sure. And don't make your blade any wider than necessary. A 2"-wide blade will hit harder than a 1.5" blade.
