Actually, wood is fine to use, you just have to run a layer of electrical tape down the shaft. ^.^ Still don't recommend it, though.
As far as durability goes, I can tell you that after a year of arching, the only shafts I have left that fly straight and true are made from carbon-fiberglass. Unfortunately, these are also the most expensive (that I've seen, anyway). There's another type of fiberglass called safety glass, but when I went to Rag, I saw SO MANY of these cracked through flight weapons check that I'm thinking of replacing my own as soon as I can. And aluminum? Well...I'd call it second best, but at it's greatest, it's a giant piece of metal flying through the air at someone's dome. And if said piece of metal decides to be kinked or bent...disaster can happen.
That being said, I love aluminum when it breaks, because it doesn't shatter and leave nasty splinters in my fingers. It's all what you prefer. But the metal does bend easy and keep the arrow from flying true.
That's my one-year of experience. I know Rhia might have some good advice for you too, as well as Ilya.

My fiberglass arrows held up ok, but splintered in a few months. My aluminum arrows bent at the first practice. But then I found carbon fiber arrows for under 2 dollars at Academy......I cried, and I haven't had any problems with em. Best arrows, I don't know. But I prefer carbon fiber.

Carbon fiber have been amazing for me. I've had some safety glass ones splinter and shatter at Ragnarok on me... and my aluminum are finally on their last legs after some kinks have become more moderate-severe than the occasional little divot. Ironically, the best short range arrows I've shot were the golf tube arrows at Ragnarok. Huge fletching ends that you can just pinch the plastic and fire. I have a nice stock of golf tubes, I just don't want to waste my arrow foam on them.
