Dagorhir Junior League Rules
For
Dominion of the Unconquered Sun
For
Dominion of the Unconquered Sun
We, the members of Dominion of the Unconquered Sun, have adopted a set of rules that go above and beyond the standard rules of Dagorhir so that our children may be allowed to participate in a league of their own. The rules from the Manual of Arms will be referenced (by their number) so that any questions about the basic rules can be managed with a standard Dagorhir Manual of Arms. These rules are still a work in progress, and if we find anything that needs to be added, we will modify the rules accordingly, and inform the participants and their parents so that safe, moderated participation of the game can continue.
1. Participation
- a. Participation in Dominion’s Dagorhir Junior league is for 7 – 12 years of age.
- b. All participants must have a waiver filled out and signed by their Parent / Guardian before any participation is allowed.
- c. All participants must have the rules fully explained to them prior to their participation in the Dagorhir Junior league.
- d. Participants are encouraged to have proper medieval standard clothing to wear within 2 months from their starting date. Minimum standards for clothing are as follows:
--- i. A tunic that is a minimum length of mid-thigh.
ii. Leggings, baggy pants, skirt or kilt of a neutral, earth-toned color
--- iii. Shoes of a neutral, earth-toned color
- e. Forbidden clothing is in accordance with Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule #1.4 in its entirety.
- f. Once a participant reaches the age of 13, they are no longer eligible to fight within the Dagorhir Junior League. The exception to the age rules stands as follows:
--- i. Participant is significantly shorter in stature than the typical sized 13 year old participant.
--- ii. Participant has only recently (within two months after their birthday) joined the Junior League.
--- iii. Participant wishes to assist with teaching others in the Junior League.
- g. Parents / Guardians are required to be at all Dagorhir Junior League events / practices. Whereas we do enjoy the participation of the children, we are not responsible for “baby-sitting” them. Parents / Guardians are still required to supervise their children’s activities.
2. General Rules
- a. General rules for Dagorhir Junior League are in accordance with Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule #2 in its entirety.
- b. It is understood that the Dagorhir Junior League has children from ages of 7-12 within it. It is the suggestion of Dominion of the Unconquered Sun that the Parent / Guardian of the participant make a reasonable judgment call on the maturity level of their child before allowing them to participate.
- c. Dagorhir Junior League officials reserve the right to exclude any child for safety reason. Safety issues that could be foreseen are as follows:
--- i. Size. Children are not all sized the same. If a child is too small, Dagorhir Junior League officials will respectfully request that the Parent / Guardian of the child in question put their participation status on hold so that the child may be able to grow to a size that is similar to the other participants.
--- ii. Maturity. Children in the age brackets of 7-12 mature at different rates. If a child is not yet quite mature enough to responsibly handle a weapon, League Officials will respectfully request that the Parent / Guardian of the child withhold the child from participation until the child has the opportunity to develop the emotional and mental maturity to fully comply with the rules.
--- iii. Safety. Children cannot always contain their excitement. League Officials have rules in place to make every attempt to have a participant understand the safety rules. However, if a child cannot comply with the rules for safety, they will be asked to place their participation on hold so that they can be taught the full and complete rules for safety at a reasonable pace. League Officials as well as Parents / Guardians are all responsible for conveying the safety rules to the children and translating them into wording that they can fully comprehend.
- d. All attempts to assist the children with learning the rules will be made by the adults sanctioned to run the Dagorhir Junior League, as well as the Parent / Guardian of the participant.
- e. If a Dagorhir Junior League Official cannot convey the rules to a child in a manner that can properly be understood, the participant will be requested to hold their participation status until the rules can be fully comprehended and adhered to.
- f. The rules of safety are in place so that no child will get unnecessarily injured. It is understood that accidents happen, but if a child causes a number of accidents that is considered by League Officials to be too many in number, the child will be requested to cease participation.
- g. The motto of: “We are all still friends after practice” has been taken. This ensures that the children are not too aggressive towards each other on the field, and it promotes a sense of fairness and confidence in the children after activities are finished for the day.
3. Types of Combat and Damage.
- a. Because there are so many different sizes of children that participate in the Dagorhir Junior League, and they are at varying stages of their development process, we have reviewed the Dagorhir Manual of Arms and simplified the rules and weapon types that are allowed within the Dagorhir Junior League. We do, however, still follow Rule #3.1. Safety first, playability second and realism third. Any questions that are found in the Dagorhir Junior League will be resolved based on how safely the children involved with the league can feasibly perform the action.
- b. Weapons must be checked before any Dagorhir Junior League event can take place. This ensures that the weapons are padded safely before it even reaches a field of play.
- c. There is only one color of weapon for Dagorhir Junior League: blue. A weapon that passes for the status of blue must conform to the rules in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule # 3.2.2.1 before it is allowed to be in play.
- d. Hit locations that are allowed within the Dagorhir Junior League are as follows:
--- i. Torso: Limited solely to shoulders, chest, stomach and sides.
--- ii. Leg: from ankle to torso (hip)
--- iii. Arm: from wrist to torso (shoulder socket)
--- iv. Hands and Feet are completely unaffected so long as hands are on a weapon and feet are on the ground. If the foot in question is not on the ground, it is treated as a Leg hit location. If the hand in question is not holding onto a weapon, it is treated as an Arm hit location.
--- v. The reason that the back, crotch, buttocks, head and neck locations are not named is for the following reasons:
------ 1. Head and Neck shots are not allowed with a blue weapon.
------ 2. Back, crotch and buttocks shots are not allowed because all Dagorhir Junior League battles are treated as Modified Honor Battles. Rules for Modified Honor Battles are explained in 3e.
- e. Modified Honor Battles are the only type of battles that are allowed in Dagorhir Junior League currently. The reasons behind that are as follows:
--- i. Children develop at different rates. Because of this fact, what may be a safe “back shot” for one child could seriously a child that is smaller.
--- ii. Because children are still developing, any “crotch shots” which are legal but frowned upon in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms, could cause significant developmental issues with a child. It is the responsibility of the Parent / Guardian of the child involved with the game to ensure that their child does not perform a “crotch shot” intentionally.
--- iii. Accidents do happen. This is why Dagorhir Junior League Officials strongly encourage Parents / Guardians of male participants to provide an athletic cup for their child.
4. Weapon Damage for a blue weapon is in accordance with the table in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule #3.4.
5. Shields are not allowed in Dagorhir Junior League events / practices.
6. Grappling is not allowed in Dagorhir Junior League events / practices.
7. Bashing is not allowed in Dagorhir Junior League events / practices.
8. Miscellaneous weapon rules
- a. The anvilling rule, as described in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule #3.8.1, shall be followed thusly:
--- i. “Anvilling, the act of laying one's weapon on a body part to avoid taking damage, shall not be permitted.”
- b. The sheathed weapon rule, as described in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Rule # 3.8.2, shall be followed.
- c. Intentionally blocking a weapon with a hand or foot shall result in the loss of the limb that the hand or foot is attached to.
- d. Gripping a blade with a hand shall result in the loss of that hand and the arm that it is attached to.
9. Weapons:
- a. All weapon rules that are in the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Section 4 shall be maintained and followed.
- b. Rule 4.2 of the Dagorhir Manual of Arms should be reviewed if there are any questions regarding what classifies as a “blue” weapon.
- c. Dagorhir Junior League participants shall use only a single blue weapon until full blade control is not only mastered, but proven to Dagorhir Junior League Officials in whatever test or manner the Official deems necessary to ensure full safety of all participants involved.
10. Armor is allowed in Dagorhir Junior League, but it does not give any extra protection.
- a. Armor is allowed solely for the purpose of providing extra padding for the participants.
- b. Armor is not required to participate in Dagorhir Junior League events / practices.
11. Wounds and Healing rules are in accordance with the Dagorhir Manual of Arms Section 6.
12. Swings and General Combat Rules
- a. Dagorhir Junior League rules may be modified as necessary to ensure the full safety of all children involved.
- b. Participants are not to hit another child any harder than is necessary to show their competitor that they have received a strike that would remove a limb / remove their torso.
- c. A strike that is deemed too hard by the Official running the event / practice will result in disciplinary actions.
13. Disciplinary Actions
- a. Because Dagorhir Junior League Officials understand that children are not taught from birth how to properly engage another child on the playing field, there is a set amount of time (1 month after a waiver is signed) in which the child is expected to learn the rules of the game. If the rules are broken, disciplinary action must be taken to ensure the full safety of all children participating.
- b. 1st rule violation: Warning. The Official will respectfully correct the behavior by gently reminding the participant of the rule that was broken.
- c. 2nd violation: 10 minute sit out: The Official, on the second occurrence of the same rule being violated, will guide the participant to a specified area for a 10 minute sit down. This helps the child to calm down and sit to prevent the situation from escalating.
- d. 3rd violation: 15 minute sit out: The Official, on the third occurrence of the same rule being violated, will guide the participant to the Parent / Guardian of the child for a 15 minute sit down. This gives the child a second chance to calm down and sit to prevent the situation from occurring further.
- e. 4th violation: Day out. At this point, an Official will speak to the child and the Parent / Guardian regarding the rule violation and the behavior that needs to be corrected. The child will not be allowed to participate in Dagorhir Junior League events / practices again for the day.
- f. If a participant has been given their Day out and returns without correcting the behavior in a manner deemed reasonable and safe by Dagorhir Junior League Officials, they will spend a minimum of 1 month out of all events and practices. At this point, the Parent / Guardian of the child will need to speak to the Officials and whoever is running the main Dagorhir event / practice that is hosting the Dagorhir Junior League event / practice before the child can return again.
The rules put forth by the Dagorhir Junior League Officials are not in attempt to stifle the creativity and enjoyment of participants. The rules are set in place in order to maintain a safe and friendly environment for all children in the appropriate age group to join in with. If at any time there is a rule that is called into question, the safety of all children shall prevail over everything. If there are any rules that are modified, added or removed, all participants and their Parent / Guardian will be notified in person and given written notice, if requested.
