Today the world lost a hero, seriously I've just received news that Jim "The Barbarian" Gassner was killed in a car accident on the way to a Ren Fest, the blog I was sent can be located here... rowangolightly.livejournal.com/898819.htmlI originally met Jim at a Dagorhir event many moons ago, and was surprised that he remembered me a couple of years later, I've fought a few battles against him (and was soundly schooled), but he was never snobbish and had a hug and smile for everyone he knew, the world will be a sadder place without him...

This is truly a tragety. Jim was one of if not the most genuine people I have ever met, and i grieve for a world with out him in it. every time i saw him, he always had a hug for me and was genuinely concerned how I was doing. You were a shining light in a dark world, I will miss you, Brother.

Jim was the sweetest man you could ever meet. He stood 5'9" but looked like 7" tall, but the second he hit you, he was by your side asking "Are you okay, sweetie?" Jim was one of the first people to welcome me to the Renaissance Festival I worked at as well as the first one to give me a hug after a rough day. He left behind his daughter and thousands of us in the Kc area as well as other places that will miss him if for no other reason then he could turn your worst day into your best. If he's listening from whatever afterlife there may be, thanks, sweetie. I'll miss you more than words could say....
PS: I'm going to see about setting up a memorial fund to help his funeral costs and possibly go towards his daughter. I'll let everyone know when I have more information on it.

My fiance worked with him in Sedalia. He was a champion for all us boffer fighters. And one hell of a guy. He liked my slave trade that I came with at the KCRF. We'll all miss him at my household.

I found Jim to be one of the nicest men I knew. If I knew he was around I'd make it a point to see him and talk about life (boffer and real). Truly my heart weeps and will miss that big lovable bald man.
One of my favorite qualities about him was no matter your age, gender or size. He'd spend time his time with you calling you "babe" or "sweetie" it was a classic Jim trait. I remember going out to Barbarian Battles and some fighters would pick on the kids in battle so he would champion the weak. Bullies wouldn't mess with them again.
I could go on about some of my favorite stories. In the end though, the world lost a good person that will left a mark on our lives. My regards go out to his loved one and family. Even more so his daughter, I lost a parent and it something you will never forget for the rest of your life.
How proud I was and still am to call Jim my friend. I will sorely miss you Jim Gassner, I pray that you are in a happier place now.

I called a lot of people and wanted to say I'm sorry. Apparently his daughter is still the age I met her at in my mind. Jason says she's actually about 15. And that still doesn't make this any easier.

He was definately the person I remembered the most from my very first trip to the KC Ren fest. He looked so intimidating but once I met him was one of the kindest guys I have ever met in my life. I am sad to see him gone. It is hard to believe another kind soul had been plucked from the world WAY WAY before his time. I will be amiss to not see him at the Ren Faires this year but his memory will definately always be fresh in my mind.
Rest in peace Jim and peace to your friends and loved ones.

I knew him from his Barbarian Battles company at the Bristol Renaissance Faire. I didn't find out he was involved in Dagorhir until I saw the memorial link on the Gates of Summer page.
