A friend asked me why i play dag, at first i thought I this was an easy question and without thinking i tried to answer and produced nothing. Now this "simple" question is really starting to bother me as I can't really produce an answer. Anyway I felt the need to pass it on and see why other people play.
The reason I play dag? No idea.

my reply, copied from a thread on the national boards...true today as it was then...
Have you ever been driving down the back roads and you turn that corner and for just a few moments…with the trees rising above you and casting shadows in your path, the fields in the background and the lack of ANYONE else on the road…you feel like you could reach out and touch a different time, a different place…one where magic can happen, where people don’t have to be afraid of fighting for what they feel is right…where we haven’t been taught to fear confrontation…where life means more than just continueing your existence…that is what Dag is to me…all of those moments where I wished I was somewhere else, somewhere that I understood…somewhere I belonged…
There is truth in Dagorhir…things that matter in mundane world don’t in Dagorhir…money, bills, work, the stress of being a young father and husband or similar…instead we begin to see the world as a child might…with eyes unclouded by preconceived notions on what is “normal” …where we begin to realize what is really important, and what is just crap that we are forced to deal with in order to survive in our society…where you realize that your family is the greatest force in your life…this is my family, my wife, my kids, the people I talk to on the boards, Khoonbish, Snake, Sasori…people I haven’t even met yet…
And to use quotes from Fight Club to illustrate how I see things…
The Problem: “Man, I see in fight club the strongest and smartest men who've ever lived. I see all this potential, and I see squandering. God damn it, an entire generation pumping gas, waiting tables; slaves with white collars. Advertising has us chasing cars and clothes, working jobs we hate so we can buy **** we don't need. We're the middle children of history, man. No purpose or place. We have no Great War. No Great Depression. Our Great War's a spiritual war... our Great Depression is our lives. We've all been raised on television to believe that one day we'd all be millionaires, and movie gods, and rock stars. But we won't. And we're slowly learning that fact. And we're very, very pissed off. “
The Preference: “In the world I see - you are stalking elk through the damp canyon forests around the ruins of Rockefeller Center. You'll wear leather clothes that will last you the rest of your life. You'll climb the wrist-thick kudzu vines that wrap the Sears Tower. And when you look down, you'll see tiny figures pounding corn, laying strips of venison on the empty car pool lane of some abandoned superhighway”
The Solution: “Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don't you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can't think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you're supposed to read? Do you think every thing you're supposed to think? Buy what you're told to want? Get out of your apartment. Meet a member of the opposite sex. Stop the excessive shopping and masturbation. Quit your job. Start a fight. Prove you're alive. If you don't claim your humanity you will become a statistic. You have been warned- Tyler. “
and because it makes me laugh… “If you could fight anyone, who would you fight? “ ” Shatner. I'd fight William Shatner.”

was actually just wondering today if there was a 'why dag' thread. When I started, I compared it to fight club, and it is. "who you are in fight club is not who you are in real life". Today I moved a lot. And I didn't just feel my body moving. I felt every little muscle moving. I rarely feel my muscles moving. I rarely feel in control of everything in my body. I've been a runner for years, and it's always just been my body that moves. Haven't felt the muscles move much. I've been sore in ridiculous places, because of dag. and I liked that. I enjoy running, but it's too much work to do alone. I enjoy martial arts but it's somewhat retarded and too strict(what I've tried at least). Dag is a good middle ground. A healthy body houses a healthy mind. Dag reminds me I'm alive. it's just fun, good stress relief(if you let it... sometimes its just stress), it's a nerdy OUTSIDE activity, the people are normally awesome, and it's like a fight club.... but I can't see it as escape, like morrowind or a vidgame or something. I'm still rooted in reality, limited by my real body, and my usual thoughts.
speaking of fight club... if anyone is interested in the latter parts of the movie... you know what I mean... pm me... or something...

When I was a little boy I loved to sword-fight. In fact every little boy I've ever met loves to sword-fight. As I got older, I quit playing childish games. I grew up. College, work, and marriage became my life. I became fat and boring, and inside I longed to kick someone’s arse with a sword. Then one day I found Dag.

I've been doing some manner of organized violence my entire life, and my share of unorganized. When I was a shrimp me and my buddies would beat on each others with staves we cut ourselves. It got really bad if we ever actually got angry and tried to hurt each other with them, but that only happened once. When I was a bit older me and another friend of mine would spar with each other a lot. When I moved out here three years ago I was pretty bummed cause I had nothing like that to do. Then I heard from a guy that he was the realm leader of people who enjoy hitting each other for fun. I was the easiest recruit this game has seen. Him: "Hey I run a group of guys that do blah blah blah (paraphrase)" Me: "Awesome, I've been looking for that my entire life, let's go right now." Him: "Ummm, we do it on the weekends, so you can come out with me on saturday." Me: "So, can you call them up and get them together now?" Him: "Uhhh, no. You can wait until saturday." Me: "Awwwww"
This kind of thing has been my passion for my entire life. Engaging in combat with other willing participants is one of the greatest ways to spen your time. Add in all the fun at events before and after the fighting and the awesome people you meet...it just doesn't get better.

I don't really know how to describe it, but dagorhir is basically the only place where I don't 'feel' out of place....
If anyone can understand that....
