Velia tries to back track and shortly gets captured and sold as a slave then she is forced to marry a man with the last name Lorcan, after a few months of being married her husband dies...
Lord Lorcan had stopped breathing; his wife stumbled to the door fists meeting wood in pure thunderous panic. An angry looking guard unlocked the door with audible disgust issuing from his throat. He grabbed the woman by the front of her dress and dragged her to a closet where he shut and locked the thick door. The woman’s eyes were filled with tears as she was surrounded by darkness. This is where they kept her when the lord wasn’t trying to get her with child, she didn’t know when she would be free again. She listened to the muted commotion as the disgruntled man called for help and more feet ran into the room then the stern voice of the medi-witch as she scolded all of them and said the words that filled the young wife’s mind with sadness.
“Lord Lorcan is dead.” There was a pause as the members of the household fell silent. They took only a few seconds before the medi-witch noticed her absence. “Where is his lordship’s wife?”
“That pig servant is locked in the closet.”
“Get her out of there right now. I must know what happened.”
“Why she can’t talk.”
“Not so you can understand, give her to me immediately.” The woman’s words were followed by the sound of the key in the lock. She had managed to stand when the large rough hand reached in and flung her out onto the floor. “If this is the way you insist on treating her I will question her alone in my private quarters where I can examine to see if she too is in danger of dying.” A soft hand reached for hers as she lay on he floor keeping her eyes downcast. She only took it because she was expected to. She was led out of the room where her husband lay dead. They didn’t make a noise and the medi-witch did not speak to her until they were safely inside the witch’s rooms.
“We don’t have a lot of time Velia. I must get you out of here and far away quickly. Can you run?” The woman’s blue eyes met with the witch’s and she nodded. “You must forget Lorcan. However his guards will not soon forget you and they will blame you for his death. Stay here I need to get a couple things together.” The medi-witch looked her over. “You’ll need to cover the marque on your back can you do that? Get in that trunk and get an extra set of clothes, your fancy clothes will give you away. If you want to live you must do as I say.” The woman nodded her understanding as the witch disappeared behind a tapestry. Velia did as she was told and as she was finishing the witch came back with bread figs and sweet water. “I’m going to lead you out of here but you’re going to have to learn your wits quickly.” She wiped the tears off of Velia’s cheeks. “It’s going to be alright as long as you keep running.” Velia nodded again. “One last thing. I know he kept this to taunt you with. I don’t know why you’re so attached to this thing but I’ve managed to save it for you.” The witch pulled out the red striped cloak from Velia’s family so long ago. She took it gingerly for a few moments before she hooked it on herself and pulled the hood over her face. She took one last look at the medi-witch and disappeared behind a shelf of herbs.
Velia had to work quickly to get out of the manor beyond it there was a town where she might find a way out of her predicament. She listened hard for unusual stirrings in the house and feared every ordinary sound that got caught in her ear. Lucky for the night sky when she reached outdoors she did not stop until she reached a stable. The horses were calm she calmly approached one and took his head into her hands bonding with the creature before she attempted to ride him out into the night.
The medi-witch claimed that Velia too was sick and she insisted that none of the guard see her while she was being treated. It was however the medi-witch’s last act kind or otherwise not two hours after the death of Lorcan his medi-witch was killed for helping a slave run away. By the time the house organized Velia had fled.
